General Relativity and Contrary Predictions*

چکیده

Using the accepted methods to extract natural system behavior from the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational field tensor equation, a new coordinate transformation is analyzed. It is demonstrated that these extraction methods yield specific contradictions. Two such contradictions are that for an electrically neutral (nonrotating) Schwarzschild configuration there is an infinite redshift surface that is not an event horizon and for a specific Schwarzschild configuration, no dustlike particle external to this configuration will, with respect to proper time, ever gravitationally collapse radially to the surface of the configuration. Einstein’s Equivalence Principle Within our universe, is it possible to differentiate physically between the force effects of a gravitational field and the apparent force needed to produce a bodies accelerated motion, where the only observations that can be made are behavior of test bodies affected by these forces? Notice that this question is relative to properties associated with “forces” and not the equivalence of initial and gravitational mass. With the help of his famous “elevator analogy,” Einstein wrote: [LetK ′ be a system of reference such that] relative toK ′ a mass sufficiently distant from other masses has an accelerated motion such that its acceleration and direction of acceleration are independent of its material composition and physical state. Does this permit an observer at rest relative to K ′ to draw the conclusion that he is on a “really” accelerated system of reference? The answer is negative; for the above mentioned behavior of freely *This research is sponsored in part by a grant from the U. S. Naval Academy Research Council. Note: I am not at all certain about the results of this research. The results presented in this paper could be in error for various reasons. Although I have attempted to apply the procedures as outlined in various texts, if my calculations are correct, then my physical interpretations may need modification or may exhibit various errors.

Geometry as an object of experience : Kant and the missed debate between Poincaré and Einstein

Poincaré held the view that geometry is a convention and cannot be tested experimentally. This position was apparently refuted by the general theory of relativity and the successful confirmation of its predictions; unfortunately, Poincaré did not live to defend his thesis. In this paper, I argue that: 1) Contrary to what many authors have claimed, non-euclidean geometries do not rule out Kant's...

Bulk Viscous Bianchi Type VI0 Cosmological Model in the Self-creation Theory of Gravitation and in the General Theory of Relativity

In the second self-creation theory of gravitation and in the general theory of relativity, Bianchi type VI0 cosmological model in the presence of viscous fluid is studied. An exact solution of the field equations is given by considering the cosmological model yields a constant decelerations parameter q=constant and the coefficients of the metric are taken as A(t)=[c1t+c<su...

The Cosmological Constant

Contrary to popular mythology, Einstein did not invent the cosmological constant just in order construct his model universe. He discussed it earlier in “The Foundations of General Relativity”in connection with the proper structure of the source-free field equations. There he dismissed it as arbitrary and unnecessary. It was later that he found its inclusion to be essential to the construction o...

Testing General Relativity with Pulsar Timing

Pulsars of very different types, including isolated objects and binaries (with short- and long-period orbits, and white-dwarf and neutron-star companions) provide the means to test both the predictions of general relativity and the viability of alternate theories of gravity. This article presents an overview of pulsars, then discusses the current status of and future prospects for tests of equi...
